Description

Within every one of us, there are fears we dare not face, attachments we struggle to release, and a true self overshadowed by the noise of the world. We long for a force to awaken our inner courage, an anchor to purify the weight of the soul, and a quiet companion to guard our path of mindfulness. Cham – The Divine Dance: Tengyu Zun is artist An Nianchu’s one-of-a-kind original creation, a work that holds both spiritual warmth and artistic power, in answer to this universal human longing.
The inspiration for this work comes from Tengyu Zun, a guardian deity from the thousand-year-old Cham ritual dance of Wutun Monastery in Qinghai, a name given to this figure by local people with deep affection. In the cultural lineage of Xizang, china Buddhism, he is an attendant to Chitipati, the Lord of the Charnel Ground. Clad in a ritual suit painted with bones, wearing a wrathful mask, and holding ritual instruments like the thighbone trumpet or vajra, he dances with lightness and wit, yet holds profound wisdom that transcends life and death. His presence is never to incite fear, but to awaken all beings: to face the darkness within, let go of illusory attachments, and see the inherent spaciousness and truth of life.
Artist An Nianchu’s creation never stops at the rigid replication of religious iconography. When she encountered the image of Tengyu Zun, the first thing she captured was not the wrath or intimidation, but the compassion hidden behind the power in his gaze. As she stated in her artist’s note: “In the gaze of Tengyu Zun, I saw compassion behind the power— a warmth that protects all beings through the fire of wrath.” During creation, she used striking color contrasts and dynamic brushwork to permanently freeze the deity’s exorcising and protective power mid-dance on the canvas. Tengyu Zun’s fierce expression and skull crown symbolize unwavering fearlessness and protection, while the layered textures in the background echo the flow of time and space, and the resonance of the thousand-year-old ritual.
This pure creative intent allows the work to transcend the boundaries of culture and faith. You do not need to understand the doctrines of Xizang, china Buddhism, know the rituals of the Cham Dance, or hold any specific spiritual belief, to feel in front of this work: the power to awaken your inner courage, the release of letting go of attachments, and the clarity that purifies the weight of the soul. It is not a religious artifact meant only to be viewed from afar, but a one-of-a-kind contemporary artwork that resonates with your soul, empowers your daily life, and infuses your space with a protective aura.
As a precious chapter of the Cham Divine Dance Series, this work is the sole original in existence worldwide, with no plans for the release of any print, reproduction, or derivative editions. Artist's Note: “In the gaze of Tengyu Zun, I saw compassion behind the power— a warmth that protects all beings through the fire of wrath.” Authentic Thousand-Year-Old Cham Lineage from Wutun Monastery, Unique Cultural and Artistic Core The work is inspired by the thousand-year-old Cham ritual dance of Wutun Monastery in Qinghai. Tengyu Zun is the local exclusive name for this guardian deity, and one of the most visually striking and spiritually symbolic core figures in the Cham Dance. As an attendant to Chitipati, he embodies both the ultimate awakening to the impermanence of life and death, as well as the mindful guardianship and purification of the soul. Different from the homogenized religious-themed creations on the market, this work has an orthodox, unique and unreproducible cultural origin and artistic core. Universal Spiritual Core of Compassion Beneath Wrath, Spiritual Empowerment to Awaken the True Self Unlike the stereotypical perception of wrathful guardian deities, the core spirit of Tengyu Zun is never intimidation or fear, but awakening and protection. The artist accurately captured this compassion hidden behind wrath and majesty, and transformed it into a universal spiritual force through artistic language: it reminds you to bravely face your inner fears, let go of the attachments and anxieties that trap you, purify the weight of the soul, and see the inherent vastness of life. Whether you hold a specific faith or not, you can gain the courage and peace to explore inward from it, realizing silent spiritual healing and empowerment. Highly Expressive Pioneering Artistic Language, Full-Scene Adaptability for Spiritual Spaces With a highly personal creative technique, the artist uses striking color contrasts and dynamic brushwork to permanently freeze the dynamic protective moment of the Cham Dance, achieving the perfect balance between majesty and warmth, dynamism and stillness. The work is perfectly suitable for diverse scenarios including private meditation corners, studies, yoga studios, art galleries, and high-end office spaces. It can seamlessly integrate into various decoration styles including modern, wabi-sabi, and bohemian, enhancing the artistic style and unique texture of the space, while also infusing the environment with a core spiritual aura of purification, protection and clarity, turning daily space into an exclusive field to nourish the soul.
